Downtown. At one time, this word struck fear and trembling into my heart and mind. Downtown was a place of unknowns: unfamiliar traffic laws, panhandlers, and the heart of The City. In the past, I had sworn to myself that I would never live in The City, never work in The City, and I would certainly not drive Downtown. Well, guess what. I not only live and work in The City; I also live, work, and drive Downtown. I am fairly certain that if I had been face-to-face with God when I swore these things to myself, He would have politely smothered His laugh with a cough while a twinkle appeared in His eyes. Ha ha. The joke's on me. :)
The reason I am now Downtown is for a job. A job I believed I had no chance of getting. I lived Outside The City and did not really desire to work in The City. But I applied and went to the interview with the intention of using the experience for further interviews. Instead, I was offered the job and snatched it up, wondering when I was going to wake up from my too-good-to-be-true dream (it is possible this could end rather quickly if circumstances change and a previous employee returns, but at this time, I am enjoying the ride and drinking up a wonderful experience mixed in with an amazing team of leaders). It could be that I am living in a dream world, but it sure is a great dream!
The intention of this blog is to 'ruminate' on my experiences. Several things have happened since I started working in this downtown church that I have found difficult to understand and settle in my heart, especially when dealing with people who need help with physical hunger and difficult situations I have no ability to really understand. I have a desire to talk about these things, and spontaneously, I was inspired (possibly divinely ;) to blog about them. I usually express myself best through writing, and while I will probably bore and confuse a great many people who may chance to stop by, I think this will be a great way for me to come to terms with many things. So, if you do chance to stop by here, welcome to my life!
